Journalist says Princess Diana leaked confidential directory to him in 1992

A former newspaper editor is claiming in British court that Princess Diana leaked a confidential directory containing royal phone numbers to him in 1992.

Clive Goodman, the former royal editor of Rupert Murdoch's now defunct British tabloid the News of the World, told a court on Thursday the late Princess of Wales gave him the directory to get back at her then husband Prince Charles, Reuters reports. Diana and Charles formally separated in December 1992 and the couple divorced in 1996.

Goodman said the princess provided him with the directory at a time she was growing increasingly bitter about her husband, according to Reuters. It contained phone numbers of senior members of Britain's royal household. He claims it was delivered to the newspaper’s offices in 1992, and the Princess herself followed up with a phone call to make sure he had received it.

Diana’s intention, according to Goodman, was to show “the scale of her husband's staff and household compared to hers," he told the court.

"She felt she was in a very bitter situation at the time,” Goodman said of Diana. “She felt she was being swamped by the people close to him and his household. She was looking for an ally to take him on to show the kind of forces ranged against her."

Reuters reports that “Goodman, who was jailed in 2007 for accessing the voicemails of mobile phones belonging to senior royal aides, is [currently] on trial, accused of making illegal payments to police officers to obtain telephone directories of the royal household. Police found 15 such directories at Goodman's home when he was arrested.”

Diana was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997.
