Country singer Scotty McCreery was visiting friends early Monday when three men reportedly broke into their Raleigh, N.C., apartment and held up the five people inside.
According to WTVD-TV, police said the incident happened just before 2 a.m. The armed men took wallets, cash and electronic items before fleeing the scene. No one inside the apartment was hurt.
The area where the incident took place is an apartment complex near the North Carolina State University campus, where McCreery is a student.
Police did not have a good description of the culprits and did not know if the apartment had been specifically targeted. Neighbors who spoke with the TV station said they heard a group of people charging up the stairs.
"All you heard was yelling like 'Who are you? What are you doing here? ' for a good five minutes," a neighbor said. "It was just yelling."
She added that the next thing she heard was people running down the stairs again, and that soon afterwards police arrived.
"We just thought it was a bunch of college students partying until that point," she said.
McCreery, the 2011 winner of "American Idol," is finishing up his sophomore year at NC State and also has a recording contract with Universal Music Group Nashville.
