PACKERS: My stab at the 53-man roster
The Green Bay Packers concluded the pre-season with a 30-8 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday night. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, LB Clay Matthews, and TE Jermichael Finley sat out the pre-season finale, while many other veterans saw very limited time.
The next order of business for Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy is to trim the roster from 75 to 53 men. Final cuts are due by 5:00pm CST on Saturday. Teams may announce an 8-man practice squad on September 1. I wanted to wait until the final pre-season game was complete before taking a crack at predicting the final 53. My predictions are below.
QB's (2): Aaron Rodgers, Vince Young
RB's (4): Eddie Lacy, James Starks, Alex Green, Jonathan Franklin
FB (1): John Kuhn
WR's (5): Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb, Jarrett Boykin, Jeremy Ross
TE's (4): Jermichael Finley, DJ Williams, Andrew Quarless, Ryan Taylor
OL (7): David Bakhtiari, TJ Lang, Evan Dietrich-Smith, Josh Sitton, Don Barclay, Marshall Newhouse, Greg Van Roten
DL (7): Datone Jones, Ryan Pickett, BJ Raji, Johnny Jolly, CJ Wilson, Mike Neal, Mike Daniels
OLB (4): Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Andy Mulumba, Dezman Moses
ILB (6): AJ Hawk, Brad Jones, Sam Barrington, Terrell Manning, Robert Francois, Jamari Lattimore
CB's (6): Tramon Williams, Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde, Davon House, Jarrett Bush
S (4): Morgan Burnett, MD Jennings, Jerron McMillian, Chris Banjo
Specialists (3): Mason Crosby, Brett Goode, Tim Masthay
For me, the toughest position to call was tight end. Matthew Mulligan was brought in to be a bruising blocker. He's a one-trick pony, who hasn't delivered the kind of impact I expected to see. Third year player DJ Williams has also failed to stand out from the rest. One of the two will be let go. I chose Mulligan because Ted Thompson tends to favor his draft choices.
As for the practice squad - this is a bit of a crap-shoot, but I could see the following players added:
QB BJ Coleman, TE Brandon Bostick, DT Josh Boyd, WR Charles Johnson, WR Tyrone Walker, LB Nate Palmer, CB Loyce Means. and DT Jordan Miller.
