Rams Head Coach, Fisher, puts Jackson trade rumors to rest
The NFL trade deadline is scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Typically, very few deals are made, but that doesn't stop the rumor mill from churning. Packers fans who had hoped the team might be in the running for St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson, might not want to hold their breath.
Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher told the St. Louis Post Dispatch, "the Steven Jackson rumors are just rumors. We're not calling around, nor are we receiving calls for that matter. Put that to rest."
This could certainly be a posturing move by Fisher to limit locker room distractions, but in regards to the Packers, I don't think it matters.
The Packers ground game has struggled after Cedric Benson was removed from the equation with a foot injury. Still, they are expecting Benson to be able to play before the regular season ends, and Jackson will be a free agent. Ted Thompson covets his draft picks - I just can't see him swinging a deal for a soon to be free agent who may only receive serious playing time for about a month.
I think the Packers will hold steady with Alex Green getting the start, but James Starks seeing an increased role. Starks finally looks healthy, is a more natural inside runner than Green, and has a propensity to fall forward and achieve those "hard yards" Mike McCarthy is in search of.
