Melvin pontificates playoff roster
MILWAUKEE - I just got done speaking with Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin on our weekly "Brewers 360" segment of Wisconsin's Morning News.
In regards to the playoff roster, Melvin explained that his staff will, "meet this afternoon, check everyone out health wise and then we'll make a decision. I don't think there will be anything major. At this point we'll probably keep 11 pitchers and 14 positional players..."
"The main thing" Melvin explained, "is we gotta check people out an make sure that people are healthy, because its a short series and its hard to have injuries in the middle of a series."
One could speculate that the roster might look like this:
PITCHERS: Yovani Gallardo, Shaun Marcum, Zack Greinke, Randy Wolf, Chris Narveson, Marco Estrada, LaTroy Hawkins, Takashi Saito, Kameron Loe, Francisco Rodriguez, John Axford
POSITION PLAYERS: Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks, Yuniesky Bettancourt, Casey McGehee, Corey Hart, Nyger Morgan, Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy, George Kottaras, Carlos Gomez, Mark Kotsay, Jerry Hairston Jr., Craig Counsell.
The 14th position player decision will be interesting. It comes down to Josh Wilson and Taylor Green. Green has been very reliable as a left handed pinch hitter, and can play two positions on the infield if necessary. But the Brewers have three left handed bats off the bench they can summon.
Wilson has been with the team the entire season but his opportunities diminished once Green was brought up. Wilson hasn't recorded a hit since August 20th
The playoff roster must be turned in the morning of October 1st - just before the Brewers playoff opening game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
