Cardinals, Berkman agree to 1-year deal

Cardinals, Berkman agree to 1-year deal

CREATED Sep 22, 2011

For those who thought the Brewers might be interested in signing veteran Lance Berkman to a free agent deal in the off-season, think again.

The veteran switch hitter agreed to a one year deal to remain in St. Louis and play for the Cardinals in 2012.

Berkman has seen quite a career revival in 2011 hitting .300 with 31 HR's and 91 RBI in 139 games. Some thought the Brewers would have interest in Berkman should Prince Fielder leave the team via free agency in the off season.

The Cardinals have their own free-agent-to-be in Albert Pujols. Signing Berkman won't exactly soften the blow if Pujols were to leave, but it sure would be better than losing both players.
