Matzek's NFL Power Rankings: Week 3

Matzek's NFL Power Rankings: Week 3

CREATED Sep 21, 2011

It usually takes about 5 weeks before things start to settle with the power rankings. One or two games is not a trend, but there are clues to note from each team in each game. A collection of clues points toward a trend.

I'm not even sure if that made sense. Enough...

BIGGEST JUMP: Buffalo Bills (from 23 to 15)

BIGGEST DROP:  Kansas City Chiefs (from 25 to 32); Indianapolis Colts (from 20 to 27)

(1). GREEN BAY PACKERS - The pass defense has allowed about 850 yards in two weeks, and will be without S Nick Collins for the remainder of the year, but can anyone stop their offense?

(2). NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS - Something tells me Tom Brady doesn't like the idea of Cam Newton holding an NFL record quite yet. Brady trumped Newton's 854 passing yards through two weeks with an incomprehensible 940.

(5). NEW ORLEANS SAINTS - No Marques Colston, no problem for the Saints. They belted the Bears and their blitz-happy defense sacked Jay Cutler 5 times.

(6). NY JETS - Quick strike offense was on display against the Jaguars.

(7). HOUSTON TEXANS - They're just fine without RB Arian Foster. Backup Ben Tate has 219 yards rushing through two weeks.

(3). PHILADELPHIA EAGLES - It sure didn't take long for Michael Vick to get his bell rung. If Vick can't pass his post-concussion tests, Mike Kafka will start against the Giants in week three.

(12). DETROIT LIONS - I know they played the Chiefs, but a 48-3 win showed explosiveness on offense coupled with a stifling defense.

(9). PITTSBURGH STEELERS - Were in need of a rebound game after getting thrashed by the Ravens in week one. Rebound they did, 24-0 win over Seattle.

(10). ATLANTA FALCONS - Matt Ryan is 21-2 as a starter at home.

(8). CHICAGO BEARS - Jay Cutler has been sacked a league high 11 times in two games, and rookie T Gabe Carimi will miss about a month with a knee injury.

(4). BALTIMORE RAVENS - How do you smoke the Steelers one week and get pasted by the Titans the next?

(13). TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS - Nice comeback over the Vikings in the dome, but the Falcons will pose a larger challenge in week three.

(11). SAN DIEGO CHARGERS - Hard to dock them for losing to the Patriots, but for as solid as they are on offense, I'm not buying the Chargers defense.

(18). DALLAS COWBOYS - Miller Lite fan of the game now playing wide receiver.

(23). BUFFALO BILLS - They are 2-0 and are scoring at will. Next up, Tom Brady and the NE Patriots.

(18). NY GIANTS - They are the most injured team in football right now...and Eli Manning is not elite.

(21). WASHINGTON REDSKINS - The 'skins are 2-0. Rookie RB Ryan Helu would be a nice fantasy pickup this week.

(17). OAKLAND RAIDERS - Another team that can score, but can't seem to stop anybody. RB Darren McFadden is incredible to watch.

(15). JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS - It's official! Rookie QB Baline Gabbert will start Sunday against the Panthers.

(16). ST LOUIS RAMS - Their redzone offense against the Giants was atrocious. They need Steven Jackson back on the field in order to be relevant.

(19). ARIZONA CARDINALS - RB Beanie Wells has been a bright spot in the Cardinals offense.

(22). MIAMI DOLPHINS - I feel as if I'm always bailing the Dolphins out given their tough schedule. Maybe they just aren't that good.

(31). TENNESSEE TITANS - Very impressive win over the Ravens, and RB Chris Johnson was a non-factor.

(24). SAN FRANCISCO 49ers - Just not enough weapons on offense.

(26). MINNESOTA VIKINGS - For the 2nd straight week they blew a sizeable lead and lost. Terrible start for the Vikings.

(29). CLEVELAND BROWNS - Most teams would be 2-0 after starting the season against the Bengals and Colts. The Browns are 1-1.

(20). INDIANAPOLIS COLTS - Is it possible for Peyton Manning to win MVP without playing a down?

(30). DENVER BRONCOS - Can Tebow play safety...or LB...or CB?

(32). CAROLINA PANTHERS - After watching them against the Packers, I can safely say the Panthers are not the worst team in football.

(28). CINCINNATI BENGALS - Rookie QB Andy Dalton is taking his lumps, but he's got some talent.

(27). SEATTLE SEAHAWKS - I think they gave up on Matt Hasselbeck a little early.

(25). KANSAS CITY CHIEFS - In a complete free fall.
