Worst call EVER

CREATED Jul 27, 2011

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been so bad for so long, that I'm starting to think their run toward the playoffs this season is being guided by a higher power. That is, until I saw how last nights game ended.

Locked in a 3-3 tie with the Atlanta Braves going into the bottom of the 19th inning (no, that is not a typo), the Braves plated Julio Lugo to score the winning run, and send Twitter into a blaze of activity. Lugo appeared to be out by a good three feet, but plate umpire Jerry Meals called Lugo safe.

Meals, who talked to a pool reporter after the game, explained his call by saying from his vantage point it didn't look like the Pirates catcher made the tag

"I saw the tag, but he looked like he 'Oled' him [like a bullfighter waving a cape at a bull] and I called him safe for that," Meals said. "I looked at the replays and it appeared he might have got him on the shin area. I'm guessing he might have got him, but when I was out there when it happened I didn't see a tag

The loss dropped the Pirates out of first place in the NL Central for the time being, and caused an uproar around those who are glued to the Pirates' post-season hopes.

Here's a video of the call in question.
