MILWAUKEE - Brewers OF Ryan Braun has released an apology statement in which he fully admits to taking performance enhancing drugs in 2011.

"Now that the initial MLB investigation is over, I want to apologize for my actions and provide a more specific account of what I did and why I deserved to be suspended," Braun says.

In the statement, Braun acknowledges he took performance enhancing drugs:

"During the latter part of the 2011 season, I was dealing with a nagging injury and I turned to products for a short period of time that I shouldn't have used. The products were a cream and a lozenge which I was told could help expedite my rehabilitation.  It was a huge mistake for which I am deeply ashamed and I compounded the situation by not admitting my mistakes immediately."

Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy told TODAY'S TMJ4's Lance Allan that he's "glad he's taking this step to fix things & get this thing behind us."

Braun has been suspended for the rest of the 2013 season.

Braun has been under suspicion of performance-enhancing drug use since 2011, as he allegedly failed a test during the 2011 MLB playoffs.

He was able to escape suspension due to how the test was handled.

As early as June, reports came out that Braun would be suspended.

Those reports involved the shut-down firm Biogenesis out of Miami, which allegedly offered performance-enhancing drugs to numerous MLB players including Braun.

Braun claimed that he was using Biogenesis as a consultant, and not as a source of performance-enhancing drugs.

Until Monday, Braun had maintained his lack of guilt when it came to PED use.

"I truly believe in my heart...that this substance never entered my body at any point," said Braun in a 2012 news conference.

"He was so vehement...but some people are already comparing him to Lance Armstrong, someone who so stridently proclaimed 'I'm innocent.' That's something he's going to have to deal with," said Journal Sentinel beat writer and 620WTMJ "Brewers 360" contributor Tom Haudricourt when Braun was suspended.

Earlier this month, a man from Milwaukee filed a lawsuit accusing Braun of using PED's as early on as his tenure at the University of Miami.
