You can never replace Bob Uecker, but when you need a fill-in, you can bring in former Milwaukee Brewers with respect and knowledge of the game who can bring something great to a 620WTMJ Brewers broadcast.
That's what the station and the team are doing by adding two former Brewers, Craig Counsell and Darryl Hamilton, to alternate as commentators on Brewers broadcasts when Uecker takes time off.
One of them will work with Joe Block when Bob Uecker chooses not to travel with the team for selected road games. He made that announcement earlier this winter.
"It's a real honor and a real treat, and I'm really looking forward to it," Counsell told Uecker on 620WTMJ's Brewers-Cubs game broadcast Monday.
"We've talked about it a lot. It's a real challenge for sure, but it's a privilege to call a Brewers game and root for a team you grew up watching...grew up listening to you."
Counsell serves as the Brewers' special assistant to general manager Doug Melvin. He grew up in Whitefish Bay. Hamilton is a TV color commentator on MLB Network broadcasts.
If both have conflicts, Fox Sports Wisconsin's Jerry Augustine will join Block. Augustine is a former Brewers pitcher and current contributor to 620WTMJ's Brewers Extra Innings.
