What Parent Can't Relate? A Dad Cries As His Son Steps Up To The MLB Plate
It was the early 1980's and two young radio guys got to be buds, even though they worked at different stations.
I was just getting to know my way around WKTI. Tom Hamilton was at WISN. I'd be there for almost 25 years. Tom went on to become the play-by-play voice of the Cleveland Indians, a job he's had for a quarter century.
I can't relate to what that has to be like, but any parent could put himself/herself in Tom's shoes Monday afternoon as he got to take a day off at spring training and watch his son--a Cleveland prospect--take an at bat in his first major league game. Click the link to watch the video. And here's some more in the way of how the whole at-bat came about--a pretty amaziing backstory that will have you liking Cleveland manager Terry Francona a lot, if you didn't already.
I haven't talked to Tom since he left town, but as a dad I feel like I know him even more.
