What's In A Name

What's In A Name

By Jeff Wagner. CREATED Aug 13, 2014

Ferguson, Mo. is ablaze after last Saturday's shooting by a police officer of an unarmed 18-year-old African American young man named Michael Brown.  Along with legitimate protests, some have used Brown's death as an excuse to go on a rampage of looting and rioting. The turmoil is continuing and may be spreading.

Against this backdrop, it should come as a surprise to no one that the Ferguson Police Department has received threats made against the Department and the as-of-yet unnamed officer.

As a result, authorities have made a decision not to release the name of the officer involved in the shooting.  The law specifies that a department typically has 72 hours to release the name of the officer in an officer-involved shooting but contains an exception for personal safety.

During the 1 p.m. hour of Wednesday's radio program, we'll discuss whether it is in the interest of the public to immediately make the name of the officer in this case public?
