Skip The Shot, Start The Epidemic

Skip The Shot, Start The Epidemic

By Jeff Wagner. CREATED Apr 14, 2014

Measles used to kill 450 children a year and disable many more.  The disease was essentially eliminated in the United States 14 years ago by the use of the MMR vaccine.

Already this year, there have been 115 reported cases of measles (compared with 189 for all of 2013).  A 2008 measles outbreak in San Diego started with one intentionally unvaccinated 7-year-old and, within one week, led to over 800 people being exposed to the disease.

In Wisconsin (and 16 other States) parents can "opt out" of having their children being vaccinated by submitting a letter saying they object based on reasons of "health, religion, or personal conviction". "Personal conviction",  or in other words, "we don't feel like it".

When parents choose not to have their children vaccinated, they not only expose their kids to disease - but other children as well.  This is especially true when unvaccinated children interact with childen who are too young to be vaccinated.

During the 2 p.m. hour of Monday's radio show, we'll discuss whether vaccinations should remain a matter of parental choice or whether requirements to "opt out" need to be significantly tightened?

Please feel free to share your thoughts in the Comments section - and be sure to check back later to hear a replay of the segment.
