In Salem And Milwaukee, Witch Hunters Occasionally Lose

In Salem And Milwaukee, Witch Hunters Occasionally Lose

The first big question that now needs to be answered is: "How did Milwaukee DA John Chisholm's latest witch hunt get started in the first place?"

The second question is: "Who will be held accountable for what may potentially be a stunning abuse of the justice system?"

It's no secret that I believe Wisconsin's  secret John Doe process is nothing short of a modern day Star Chamber.  It is absolutely incredible to me that prosecutors can conduct secret investigations and prevent the subjects of those investigations from defending themselves in public.

On top of that,  the political investigations run by the Milwaukee County DA's Office show a pattern of behavior that in my opinion is nothing short of a disgrace.

Now, it turns out that a judge has determined that search warrants issued in the latest political witch hunt against conservative groups lack probable cause!  They lack probable cause!  Unbelievable.

Seriously, who is running this clown car act?

In more than a decade as a prosecutor, I don't think I ever drafted a search warrant that was subsequently found to lack probable cause.  It just shouldn't happen - especially in cases like this where the prosecutors hold all the cards.  Did I say "unbelievable"!

And if the search warrants lack probable cause, what is the basis for instigating the second John Doe investigation in the first place?

Despite what I consider to be some extremely questionable behavior during the original John Doe process, prosecutors were never held accountable.  If search warrants issued in "Son of John Doe" were really lacking in probable cause, one has to wonder how this most recent investigation got this far - and what the real motives some of those driving the investigation were?

Frankly, I think it's way past time to shut down the latest wild goose chase - and start looking at how it got started in the first place!

The good news (I guess) is that Friday's developments show that just like in Salem, witch hunters in Milwaukee can go too far!

During the 12 p.m. hour of Monday's radio show we'lll talk about the stunning turn of events in "Son of John Doe".  Please feel free to share your thoughts in the Comments section - and be sure to check back later to hear a replay of the conversation.
