Really Bad To Much Worse - Mob Violence In A Soon-To-Be Concealed Carry World ...
There's no other way to say it. This is really, really bad!
For the second time in a month, a group of black teenagers have gone on a crime spree.
On July 3rd, a mob looted a convenience store on Humboldt and North and subsequently attacked white victims in Reservoir Park. The police response was wholly inadequate and it appears that those responsible for the beatings have completely escaped prosecution!
Thursday, a mob of black teenagers went out of control on the grounds of the Wisconsin State Fair. Seven State Fair Police Officers were injured and two were hospitalized. A handful of arrests were made.
The mob, after being forced off of the grounds of the State Fair, went on a rampage through the surrounding community. Again, police response was completely inadequate and numerous white people were assaulted. As with the attacks in Reservoir Park, it appears that almost all of those responsible have gotten away scot free.
Incredibly, only seven people were arrested outside of State Fair Park. Seven out of hundreds!
So, where do we start?
State Fair has implemented rules designed to make it more difficult for young people to congregate. That's sad but probably necessary.
Unfortunately, the ever-so-politically correct Mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett, continues to stick his head in the sand and foolishly downplay the racial overtones of the beatings. Talk about fiddling while Rome burns. At least a couple of Milwaukee Aldermen see this incident for what it was - a series of hate crimes!
For his part, Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn has once again been caught flat-footed - as were the West Allis Police.
So, what happens now?
First, to the extent that parents have lost control of their kids, authorities need to get a handle on these mobs before things get worse. Flynn's promise of saturation patrols is a good - if somewhat belated - idea.
Very shortly, it's going to be legal in Wisconsin for people to carry firearms to defend themselves. My nightmare is imaging a group of punks picking the wrong victims to attack and then being surprised when the would-be victims choose to protect themselves and go "Dirty Harry" on the mob. I'm seriously afraid that something like this is going to happen unless we put a stop to the current madness.
Second, we need to do a better job of catching and prosecuting the thugs who are responsible for the attacks. As it stands now, the message is that there are absolutely no consequences for the vast majority of people responsible for the Riverwest and State Fair attacks. That's hardly a deterrent to future bad behavior.
Third, parents need to take control of their children. An African-American caller to my show Friday lamented that he was afraid that we'd lost a generation of urban youth. I sure hope he's wrong - but in light of the last month, it's hard to argue with him. At least in Milwaukee.
It really breaks my heart to see what's going on in my hometown. I thought that perhaps we'd learned something after the Riverwest rampage - but apparently I was wrong. Time is running out though and we can't let this situation continue to get worse before it gets better.
Mr. Mayor, are you listening?
