Justin Timberlake - The New King of Pop

CREATED Sep. 24, 2013

Next week, Justin Timberlake will release his second album of the year, "The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2." Today, I caught a review offering it 3 1/2 stars out of 4.  After a few quick clicks, I found that iTunes is streaming the album in its entirety RIGHT NOW.

While streaming the album, I started to daydream about Timberlake's career and how long he's been a part of pop culture.  We first met Timberlake in 1995 a member of N'Sync.  That was 18 years ago!  Wow!

At 32 years old, could Justin Timberlake be more accomplished now than Michael Jackson at the same age?  Their careers are not identical but they are not totally different.

We all know Michael's career - Jackson 5, solo career, worldwide icon then weird.

Justin's career - Mouseketeer, N'Sync, solo career, movie star then married Jessic Biel (+1).

By the time Michael Jackson was 32 he was the "King of Pop" and had scored 24 top 40 hits!  He ended his career with 35 top 40 hits.

Timberlake already has 30 top 40 hits! Whoa, what?  JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE HAS MORE TOP 40 HITS RIGHT NOW THAN MICHAEL JACKSON AT THE SAME AGE.  10 with N'Sync, 13 as a solo artist, 7 as a guest artist.  I feel like I should add an asterisk to this statement, because 7 of his top 40 hits featured Timberlake as a "guest artist."  But, that collaboration is a reflection of pop music today. Timblerlake's smooth voice is the perfect complement for a rapper to toss in for the killer hook.  One of best examples of this is Timberlake's amazing work on Jay-Z's single "Holy Grail." Timberlake just flat out makes that song a smash.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm yelling at my computer screen as I type this too.  I can't believe that Timberlake has more hits than MJ had at this point in his career.  He only needs 6 top 40 hits to pass Michael for his entire career.  It will happen, soon.

As if to rub it in, Timberlake was fantastic in the Social Network and he's one of the greatest SNL hosts alive.  Need I remind you of this sketch?  Or this sketch?  Or this sketch

You need to check out the live stream opportunity for his new album "The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2."  I've now streamed about half of it and it's smooth, catchy and fun.  Just like Michael Jackson was back in the day.  RIP Michael.  All Hail the NEW King of Pop.
