Best Food of The Wisconsin State Fair
The Wisconsin State Fair announced earlier this year that they wanted to formally judge the food offerings for the 2013 Fair. We've seen this story before and about this time each year we hear about some of the Fair "delicacies" like lard soaked bacon wrapped in cheddar cheese and served between two twinkies. (does that exist? No? Are you sure? Anyway...). The Sporkies were destined to be different. The fair gathered a group of legit celebrity foodie judges and challenged contestants to create "new and unique" foods for the Fair.
Over 40 items were entered into the competition and those dishes were boiled down (bad pun, sorry) to a final 8 items. The finalists were judged by the panel that included restaurantuer Joe Bartolotta and Packers Super Bowl Champion Gilbert Brown.
Check out the pic of me and Gilbert. Let's just say I was very polite and respectful of Mr. Brown. I'm pretty sure he could be sitting in a lawn chair and still kick my butt.
The finalists included:
GET ON WITH IT J. PAT - WHO WON???
Okay, sorry...to the winners:
Best Tasting: Island Noodles - Island Slaw
Judges Reaction: On Milwaukee's Andy Tarnoff said "This is the best gluten free dish I've ever had."
Here's an interview where I asked some hard hitting journalist guy questions:
Most Creative AND Grand Champion: La Coppa Artisan Gelato - Mela Fritta Gelato on a Stick
Judges Reaction: During the sampling, Gilbert Brown slowly stood up and everyone wondered what was going on. Was he sick? Was something wrong? He calmly walked over to La Coppa's Arthur Sawall and HUGGED HIM. Without a word, he sat back down!
Here's an interview with Kevin Sawall about the dish and how you can get it!
You MUST have this dessert at the Fair. That's not a request ;p
I would say Bon Appetit but since it's the State Fair, I'll keep it much more casual and just say: "Let's Get our Eat on!!!" Enjoy!
