Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux was arrested on Canada Day (July 1) for groping the buttocks of an Ottawa police officer around 9 p.m.

Ottawa police have since decided not to charge Giroux. He was held overnight in an Ottawa jail cell and subsequently released on July 2.

"Ottawa police officers were patrolling inside The Great Canadian Cabin on York Street in the ByWard Market when Giroux allegedly repeatedly grabbed an officers buttocks and mocked him," reports the Ottawa Citizen

"The media log, which provided a summary of Wednesday’s news releases and media calls, said an Ottawa officer told Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Ron Hextall and director of Communications Zach Hill the police would keep the same media line as the franchise: 'We cannot confirm or deny the subject of a police investigation unless charges are laid,'" further reports the Ottawa Citizen.

According to the Ottawa Citizen, "Typically, police take into account the severity of the alleged offense, the criminal record of an accused and their demeanor when they are interviewed to determine whether charges will be laid."

Neither the NHL nor the Philadelphia Flyers have released a statement further addressing the arrest.
