Since Grace Kelly stunned in an aquamarine dress designed by Edith Head at the 1955 Oscars—where she won Best Actress for “The Country Girl”—the race has been on to make a statement on the Academy Awards red carpet.

In the video above, Time magazine takes trip through the history of game-changing Oscar dresses, including Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1996 simple pink tank dress that managed to make everyone else on the red carpet look old, and propelled her from little-known girlfriend of Brad Pitt to fashion icon.
Similarly, a yellow, chinoiserie-inspired gown helped Nicole Kidman go from minor film actress best know for being married to Tom Cruise into a much-admired fashion plate and eventual superstar.
Check out the revolutionary Oscar fashion in the video above, including Keira Knightly's Vera Wang pick, to dresses worn by Tilda Swinton, Cher, Chloe Sevigny, Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence and more.
