Going to my first 'real' Packers home game this weekend since moving to Wisconsin has made me reflect on the impact being a Green Bay Packers fan has had on my life. It's more wide ranging than wins or losses, or Super Bowl victories. It's about family and friends in addition to X's and O's.
It served as part of the foundation of my relationship with my father.
We always had the Packers to talk about. I thank him for passing on his love of the team to me.
One of the last great conversations I had with him before he died was after the Super Bowl XLV win. I treasure the fact I was able to give him a Super Bowl championship hat signed by Korey Hall for his birthday and see his smile. He didn't have much time left after that.
Some of my closest friendships have come through the Packers.
I will see many friends today before, during and after the game.
Sunday will be all about the game, but there's quite a large gang of us who also talk families, politics, go to Brewers and Badger games, and just enjoy life in general together (although, I admit, the topic of conversation always turns to the team eventually).
There's a level of caring between all of us that is quite profound, even when we disagree, and I wouldn't have met any of these people without being a Packers fan.
I'm sitting in my house in Wisconsin.
While I always wanted to visit Green Bay, even when I made the decision to try to move to the area, I didn't know if I'd really be able to pull it off. I did.
I love it here. Being in the DMV on a Friday before the game day and seeing all the clerks in Packers jerseys says it all. It's nice to fit in.
Last, but not least, there's the fact that you are reading this post right now. When I started writing about the Packers on a personal blog years ago, I had no idea that anyone besides my family would ever read my thoughts on the Packers, or listen to my voice on the Out of the Pocket podcast
(although, to be honest, they're probably listening more for my co-hosts).
It's a joy to express my thoughts on the Packers and their performance, and I'm grateful that people actually pay attention to my opinion.
The Packers have had quite an impact on my life. It's safe to say that will continue to happen. I can't wait to see what comes next.
