The blood is boiling a little more between the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.
Now, it's the comments from 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh about Matthews.
As tweeted by Comcast Sportsnet (NBC) Bay Area's Matt Maiocco:
Jim Harbaugh said Packers OLB Clay Matthews will be in need of some image repair after his open-handed "slap" of Joe Staley.— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoCSN) September 9, 2013
And from the San Francisco Chronicle's Eric Branch:
Harbaugh said Clay Matthew gave Joe Staley a punch and “one open slap” … Harbaugh: If you’re going to go to the face, come w/ some knuckles.— Eric Branch (@Eric_Branch) September 9, 2013
McCarthy took the high road in defending his linebacker, saying "Clay Matthews is not a dirty player, by no means."
"We talk collectively as a team staying above that stuff...we're focused on Washington," he added in an exclusive conversation with 620WTMJ/NBC Packers reporter Larry McCarren.
He went on the record in his news conference about the play in itself.
"I thought it was a bad decision by Clay,” said McCarthy. “He was overzealous, left his feet playing hard...I think it is football. It was blown out of proportion. Clay played well in the game. I thought it was one of a couple of bad plays."
