Now-traded Axford says change was needed, time to 'go somewhere else'

CREATED Sep. 10, 2013

A beloved Milwaukee Brewers reliever says that he needed to change locales after pitching through two subpar seasons for the Milwaukee Brewers.

"It seemed like Milwaukee was coming to an end for me, and it was time to carry on and go somewhere else, and start anew once again," said John Axford to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The Brewers traded Axford to the St. Louis Cardinals late last month.

"Milwaukee gave me a huge opportunity; the Brewers gave me a huge opportunity. And I took advantage of it the best I could, and did a great job the best I could for as long as I could. Then, the last couple of seasons things haven't worked out quite as well. Maybe that's what was needed, a change," he told the newspaper.

He also said "it's been a good transition so far."
