McCarthy: 'Keep Calm and Carry On' more than week's philosophy, but reflection of family

During a news conference this week, Packers coach Mike McCarthy unveiled a little Winston Churchillian philosophy for his team after the inundation of injuries his team has endured.

"Our theme is 'Keep Calm and Carry On.' You historians would probably appreciate that. 1939, issued by the British government right before World War II in anticipation of the bombing of major cities. That's what we're talking about," said McCarthy.

On 620WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Morning News," he imparted not only how the philosophy is working for his team, but about how his family - with a lot of young children - lives by it, too.

"That frame of 'Keep Calm and Carry On' has been in our home since we've (McCarthy and his wife Jessica) been married," said McCarthy.

He further explained, with a laugh, "It's located in a really good spot because it's one of the first things you see when you come into the kitchen, into the family area, and that's usually bonkers, kids bouncing off the walls.  It's a good reminder that I'm home."

He said that using a philosophy from home isn't something new for him, because he sees the similarities between being a parent and being a coach of a team trying to win a Super Bowl.

"It's a direct parallel.  Parenting and coaching, teaching, there's so many common threads that run through that.  You see it.  Your players don't want you to talk about them as if they're your kids, but the reality is, you talk about family and the things you do for your family, sacrifices you make for one another, the things you do for one another.  It's all the same."

He says his family sees many such quotations around their house.

"(Jessica) has a real appreciation for the arts, history.  She loves quotes.  We have a lot of quotes, pictures around our home."
