Today's Outlook

Summer heat and humidity this weekend

The forecast into tonight is mainly about fog. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for all lakeside counties until 10 am on Saturday.  The air will be muggy with lows in the upper-60's to around seventy degrees. We could also see some patchy dense fog away from Lake Michigan. Get ready for a warm and humid stretch. With a stationary front to our south, we have to keep the chances of storms in all through Saturday, then into next week. At least it will feel like summer for once. If we'd see anything, it wouldn't last all day, Saturday. Highs will top out in the lower-80's for Milwaukee's temperature and our lakefront communities and upper-80's for Waukesha's temperature and inland areas. Chances of storms continue Saturday night. As of right now, Sunday looks warm, humid and rain-free. Highs will top out in the lower-80's for Milwaukee's temperature and our lakefront communities and upper-80's for Waukesha's temperature and inland areas. Monday looks warm and humid, even by the lake. There will be a chance of storms. Highs will top out in the upper-80's. Tuesday looks warm and humid again with a chance of a storm.

We often get requests to define the dew point in summer, as many folks still adhere to relative humidity as their gauge of how sticky the air feels at their location. The reason meteorologists like dew point as a measure is that it is a simple number that can explain atmospheric moisture. Here’s an example from yesterday in Madison. At four o’clock the temperature at the airport in Madison was 88 degrees, and the air was very sticky.  The relative humidity at that time was fifty-seven percent. Does that sound like sticky, humid air to you?

The dew point at the same time was seventy-one degrees. Dew points in the seventies are considered tropical, while mid to upper sixties are considered very humid. Dew points below sixty degrees are comfortable, and very comfortable below fifty degrees. When the dew points reach the mid to upper-seventies the air feels very uncomfortable, and upper-seventies to low-eighties is considered to be very oppressive conditions.
