Dr. Ramel Smith, psychologist at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, appeared on Wisconsin Tonight to talk about opening the lines of communcation with teenagers.
Dr. Smith recommended parents make time to talk beyond the "must-haves" such as: Do you have any homework? When will you be home? Will their parents be home? You need some sleep. Pick up your clothes.
Have bridge builders: other people your teen feels comfortable talking to such as a pastor or school counselor.
And know the peaks and valleys of communication are normal. Keep talking.
