Nash Grier isn't a household name, but the 15-year-old from North Carolina is well-known when it comes to social media. The teen is among the Top 25 most-followed users of mobile app Vine, with more Vine followers than such web-savvy celebs as Ellen DeGeneres, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber.
Vine, for the uninitiated, is a video app that allows users to make and share six-second clips from mobile devices. Since he started producing his own videos in April, Grier has made about 125 of them, often featuring his siblings, including 4-year-old sister Skylynn. In just six months, the high school sophomore has amassed 1.4 million followers, gaining about 100,000 more each week, according to the Charlotte Observer. He also has 80,000 Twitter followers and 230,000 Instagram followers.
While the clips are often played for a quick (make that very quick!) laugh, cuteness can be a factor of their success, as evidenced by the one in which Skylynn sings just a few seconds of the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow." The result was about 375,000 likes and 300,000 "re-Vines," with others posting the video on their own feeds. Not bad for a clip that the teen says took about 2-3 minutes to put together. Others, especially those involving stunts, take a while longer to produce.
Originality, Nash says, is the key. "Upbeat stuff that’s kinda wild and makes people laugh," he notes.
