Can Harry Potter's magic translate to the stage?

NEW YORK - JULY 15: Shane Culver, dressed as Harry Potter, waited six hours to purchase the new Harry Potter book at Barnes and Noble in Union Square July 15, 2005 in New York City. J.K. Rowling's sixth installment of her Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." went on sale at midnight in New York. Appetite for the book was whetted by Rowling's revelation that a major character would meet his or her demise, and the US publisher of the Potter series, Scholastic Inc., responded to the demand with a record-breaking first printing of 10.8 million copies. After successfully conquering the worlds of books and screens, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling is now taking her creation to the stage. The boy wizard will be the subject of a new play set to make its debut in London's West End theater district in 2015. Reuters reports, "The theatrical production will explore the previously untold story of Harry's early years as an outcast and orphan." Rowling will be one of the play's co-producers.

"After a year in gestation it is exciting to see this project moving on to the next phase," she said in a statement on her Web site. She adds that the new production will "offer a unique insight into the heart and mind of the now legendary young wizard."
"Rowling will collaborate with a playwright on the new production but will not script it herself," Reuters reports.
The Harry Potter book series has sold more than 450 million copies worldwide, and the eight films have earned more than $7.7 billion in global box-offices, making the films the largest-grossing franchise in history, Reuters reports. Earlier this year Rowling announced she would be working on a new Harry Potter-themed film series for Warner Bros.
