SHEBOYGAN- Katie Klueger has had enough.
"I just want to get heat and hot water right now," she said.
After more than a week without those basics in her Sheboygan apartment, she's packing up and moving out.
"Its been cold, nothing has been done, and it doesn't sound like anything is going to get taken care of," Klueger said.
The utility company shut off the gas in the building after her landlord, Elijah Muhammad Rashaed, failed to pay an outstanding bill.
Attorney Mark Silverman with Legal Action Wisconsin is familiar with Rashaed's business practices. He advises those who decide to stay and wait it out to pay a portion of the rent also legally known as rent abatement.
"Number one, it gets the landlords attention because he is getting less rent, and hopefully the landlord will make the repairs," Silverman said.
Silverman suggests along with your partial payment to write a letter to your landlord stating:
"I'm abating my rent in the amount of... for May rent due to... list what the problems are in the premises."
And don't forget to sign, date it, and make a copy for your records.
The city building inspector says Elijah Muhammad Rashaed has been fined $5,600. That bill will continue to rise at $700 a day until the issue is resolved.
