WAUWATOSA - Neighbors tell TODAY’S TMJ4 that their block on 62nd and North in Wauwatosa has been plagued by a rash of bike thefts this summer, and the problem has only gotten worse.
Dan Underberg never had a reason to keep his bikes on lockdown, but now he does. He believes a group of boys have stolen at least six bikes in the block in the past two weeks.
“Our neighbor actually encountered and confronted one of the kids on the corner and was able to get one of the bikes back," recounts Underberg. He’s seen the boys before and says they looked young.
“When you have anybody that's 10, 12 years old participating in this, at least that’s what they looked like age-wise... It's sad," expresses Underberg.
The group also stole his bikes. Dan tells TODAY’S TMJ4 some of the teens were standing in his neighbor’s yard. Another teen walked into his garage, picked up a bike, and wheeled it to the other teens who were waiting.
Police later found one of Dan’s bikes, and he was able to get that one back. We tried to ask the Wauwatosa Police Department about the thefts, but we were told they were unavailable.
“It puts a damper on the summer, it does. But at the same time, it puts perspective to it - they're bikes. It could've been a lot worse," explains Underberg.
Dan admits that his bikes weren't locked up and his garage door wasn't closed. Now he plans to lock them up, and keep his garage shut. He adds that the only other time he’s had a bike stolen from his garage was when he moved into the neighborhood about 15 years ago.
