MILWAUKEE - At the corner of North 42nd Street and West Burleigh Street in Milwaukee is Glory Daaze Bar. Harold Jewell is charged with second degree sexual assault and physical abuse of a child after he allegedly brought the 14-year-old girl into Glory Daaze on Wednesday August 7, 2013.
“I just don’t see them letting a 14-year-old girl in there,” said Tawanda Carpure.
Carpure is a regular patron at the bar. She said the bar has a strict security code and always checks IDs. But the criminal complaint said the teen was originally denied access to bar earlier this summer.
Jewell exchanged numbers with her and brought her back to the bar last week. The complaint outlined Jewell, “said he was the owner of the bar.” But in reality he’s only related to the owners.
The pair walked by security, avoiding an ID check, and the complaint said the “two of them sat at the bar where she had two drinks.”
The complaint went on to say the girl, “did tell the defendant that she was 14.”
Carpure believes something isn’t adding up.
“I don’t believe it because I stay here until close,” said Carpure.
It was at closing time when the court documents said the girl and others went upstairs. While there Jewell is accused of propositioning the teen. She told investigators, “she did not want to have sexual intercourse.”
The complaint said Jewell forced himself onto the girl and then accused her of stealing some jewelry. Court documents show he picked up some plywood and swung it at the teen, eventually striking her.
The teen escaped only after she jumped from an upper balcony.
We stopped by Jewell’s last known address. He is currently out on bond. No one answered. The common council already suspended the bar's license, due to violence around the club.
However, that suspension doesn’t take effect until September 16th. The 14-year-old victim was able to ID Jewell in a photo lineup. If convicted, Jewell faces more than 40 years in prison.
We reached out to common council members to see if this incident at Glory Daaze would affect its decision to renew the license after the current suspension. They had no comment at this time.
