BROWN DEER – Teachers don’t become educators for the recognition, but every now and then exceptional teachers do get recognized for all the work they do. That was certainly the case today as Bonnie Seefeldt got the surprise of a lifetime. Seefeldt has been a pre-kindergarten teacher for 28 years, her students at Brown Deer KinderCare call her Miss Bonnie. They love to hear her read, “At KinderCare the lion learned many things like reading and how to be a good friend."
But today, the book she was reading was about her… only she didn’t know it. Bonnie continued to read the book to her eager students, "One day this teacher was given an award? This is... oooh Miss Bonnie has to catch a breath, say catch a breath miss Bonnie! Ohh my goodness... am I really supposed to keep reading?"
Co-workers took over reading the book as Miss Bonnie discovered she won a big award from Knowledge Universe. A huge check was presented to her by KinderCare’s Regional Vice President, Susie Egr, "On behalf of Knowledge Universe... we'd like to give you $10,000!” In awe, Bonnie asked if it was for real and Egr validated the surprise, "For real... for all of the amazing things you've done!"
Moments after the applause, hugs and a huge check, Bonnie was making plans to give her award money away, “I have the most amazing son, and his name is Nate, and this is definitely going to go towards his college education. I'm so proud of him."
Because her student’s recognition is what she really loves, "When they come running up to you in the morning and they just want a great big hug or at night when they don't want to go home, they want to stay. That's the kind of recognition that keeps you coming back."
Bonnie is one of 13 KinderCare teachers across the nation to receive the award, 24,000 were nominated.
