MILWAUKEE - A teenager has received a huge honor by being named Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Club of America. Beverly Jackson is a student at Ronald Reagan High School in MIlwaukee.
Jackson was chosen for her character, leadership skills and community service. She has been a member of the Mary Ryan Boys and Girls club since she was eight years old, and praises the Boys and Girls Club for helping her grow.
"They have a lot of opportunities," she said. "There are people who can relate to you there who are willing to help you out."
Jacquelyn Zeledon of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee beams with pride when describing Jackson.
"Out of 75,000 club members in Wisconsin she represents truly the best of the best leadership, service to the club an and commitment to the family and school," Zeledon explained.
Even though she's still in high school, Jackson has encountered a number of personal challenges. Eleven days after her 17th birthday, Beverly lost her mother to Lymphoma. The devastation forced her to grow up early.
"I had to really open my eyes and make decisions for myself," Jackson said. "She wasn't there to tell me you need to do this or do that. I had to make my choice."
Jackson is president of Student Council and serves on a number of school committees including the Superintendents Student Advisory Council.
"We couldn't be prouder of Beverly," said Principal MIke Roemer. "She has been a voice for our school particularly at the MPS level."
Jackson expresses gratitude to Ronald Reagan High School and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee. She says both are key roles in her path to success. The s tudent plans to go to college after graduating in May. She hopes to work in the field of social work so that she can help others. As winner of Youth of the Year she was awarded a $1,000.00 dollar college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation.
