MILWAUKEE- They call him the fisherman.
E.B. Garner has reeled in thousands of kids to his annual fishing clinic over the past 15 years. Kids and adults are hooked on learning the basics of catching a fish. Garner explains, "I teach them to be patient. They just want to throw it in the water and reel it in. I tell them if you let it sit, you get a bite."
Garner was cast into his role after seeing a young boy acting up in the alley. He promised to take the boy fishing if he behaved better. The young man's mom could not believe the results. E.B. remembers, "She said, he has passed his exams, he didn't miss no school! She said, what did you do to make him go to school?" E.B. got the boy excited about fishing.
Garner admits, "I get a good feeling inside knowing that I was able to do this for the kid." To Garner, his clinics are more than nurturing future anglers. They're about humanity, love and giving back.
Garner observes, "That's the reason kids join a lot of gangs. They want attention and they want to be known. They want to belong to somebody." But thanks to E.B. Garner, kids all over the Milwaukee area are learning a pastime they can enjoy a lifetime.
E.B. Garner's 15th annual sporting event it June 2, at the Washington Park Lagoon. For more information you can call (414) 342-3929.
