MILWAUKEE - One has been family owned since the 1970's. The other is a fresh face in the local restaurant scene. They both have one thing in common, clean dining! Here are this week's Blue Ribbon Award winners.
The Calderone Club brand has been "in the family" since the 1970's, and for 30 years the location on Old World Third and Kilbourn has served Milwaukee.
"My dad left us a good blueprint, we followed it. Keep the authenticity of the food," now-owner and executive chef Gino Fazzari told us. Part of his father's blueprint includes keeping a clean kitchen. "You clean before, you clean during, you clean after."
Fazzari points out it all has to start with good employees. "The passion that they have for keeping a clean kitchen is inherent in the employee."
For its clean health inspection, the Calderone Club gets our first Blue Ribbon Award.
Over on the east side, Pita Pit on Farwell near North just opened its doors. The serving size won't leave you hungry, and it's all about healthy ingredients.
"We custom build it. we have vegan and vegetarian options as well as lots of fresh veggies," owner Andrew Culp told us.
He says training makes all the difference when it comes to cleanliness. "We had great training from corporate, and it helps us a lot we have a lot of food safety certified people in here to make sure we keep the store clean."
Pita Pit had an all clean on its health inspection and gets our second Blue Ribbon Award.
