North side coffee shop serving food, health violations

CREATED Nov. 1, 2012

MILWAUKEE- A specialty coffee spot on the city's north side is now serving up food and a lot of violations.
"Coffee Makes You Black" is located in an old bank building on Teutonia and Hadley.

A busy lunch hour when we stopped by.  But a manager didn't want to talk about things like the lack of hand washing.

A health inspector had to tell a food handler to wash their hands after touching their face. That inspector also saw no hand washing between loading dirty dishes and unloading clean ones, and an employee touching customer's food with bare hands.
There were food temperature problems.  A container of potatoes were not being cooled properly.  Eggs and waffle batter were too warm at 50 & 58 degrees. The safe cold temp is 41 degrees.
There were no expiration dates on prepared food.  Shelf life is seven days.  The inspector found moldy strawberries in a cooler; they were ordered thrown out.
This spot had to do some cleaning.  There was a build up of food debris on a potato dicer, a dirty cutting board in use and debris on the inside surfaces of the ice machine.
We were asked to leave and told "Coffee Makes You Black" has no comment.  The restaurant was fined and has until next week to fix the violations.
