Tips for working with moving companies
MILWAUKEE - This is the time of year that many people will be moving, but if you plan to hire a moving company, listen up.
What should you do before you hire a mover?
Start early, research moving tips, and get more than one written, binding estimate, from reputable movers.
Ask questions about the process and how your items will be protected against loss or damage.
Since the coverage provided by movers is limited, you might want to purchase additional coverage.
What kind of precautions should you be taking on moving day?
If at all possible, make sure that you are present and supervising during packing and loading, and that the proper identification and condition of your items are noted on the inventory.
Get a copy of the inventory, bill of lading and receipt from the mover before they leave.
If you have valuables such as jewelery, important papers, or fragile, family heirlooms, it might be a good idea to take these items with you.
What do you do if you notice that items are missing or damaged?
Address the issue with the moving company immediately, and file a claim.
If you cannot get the moving company to resolve the issue, ask the mover for information about how to take the claim to arbitration.
If you are unable to resolve the claim with arbitration, you may be able to get help from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Wisconsin Department of Consumer Protection or by taking private legal action against the mover.
