Use caution when hiring an estate sale agent
MILWAUKEE - If you plan to hire an agent to liquidate an estate, you may want to proceed with caution.
Liquidating an estate can be a major endeavor, and a growing number of consumers are opting to hire an estate sale agent to handle the process.
But, if you plan to hire someone to do the job, you need to take some precautions.
Most importantly, make sure that you are dealing with an experienced, reputable agent, and check out their reputation with consumer agencies and others who have used their services in the past.
It might also be a good idea to check out their services by attending one or two of their estate sales.
Ask questions and get a detailed contract that clearly spells out terms and conditions like staffing, commissions, types of services to be provided, how items will be priced and discounted, and when proceeds will be paid out.
To avoid a conflict of interest, you might also want to stipulate that the agent will not be allowed to purchase any items that are for sale.
It is also a good idea to be present during the entire set-up and sale.
If you cannot be there, try to have a trusted friend or relative on site at all times.
