Scams on the rise for small businesses
MILWAUKEE - Many of us take measures to protect ourselves against scams, but if you own or work for a small business, watch out.
There are a number of scams targeting small businesses.
Some of these scams include fake invoices for office supplies, websites, or other things the business did not request.
There have also been scams that involve unusual orders and payments to the business, with a request for the small business to wire or apply money to a fraudulent account, or phishing attempts to get an unsuspecting employee to release sensitive information that could be used by a scammer to defraud a business.
If you own or work for a small business, use the same diligence that you would use to protect your own personal information and make sure that others in the business are doing the same.
Also, make sure that you are taking extra measures to secure information that is stored on computers or shared online.
Keep good records, and do not be tricked into paying for items listed on fake invoices.
If you spot something that seems suspicious, alert consumer agencies immediately so that further action can be taken to stop fraudulent or misleading activity.
