MILWAUKEE - Over the next few weeks, a number of students and parents will be hitting the stores, trying to find the some great back to school deals.

Before you part with your hard earned cash, you need to pay attention so that you can avoid learning a lesson from the school of hard knocks.

Whether its crayons, paper, computers, or clothes, you really need to do your homework and stay alert when you do your back to school shopping.

Before you head out to the stores or buy online, here are a few things that you may want to do to get the best deals and avoid getting taken:

Compare prices and read the fine print. Some of these great deals are in limited supply or come with a catch.

Look for coupons or coupon codes on reputable websites that can offer discounts or free shipping.

Bring flyers with you and watch the display on the register as items are being scanned.

If you spot a mistake, try to get it fixed before you leave the register. Keep your receipt and all packaging, just in case an item needs to be returned.

If you decide to keep purchases in your car while you continue to shop, make sure to lock it, and keep packages hidden from plain view.
