MILWAUKEE - A 32-year-old woman from Milwaukee was killed after being hit by a car Sunday night, and police have said they arrested a 48-year-old suspect in connection to the death.
Andrea Barringer was newly engaged and ready to start a new year at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee.
"She was well respected by her faculty members and very beloved by her fellow students," explains Susan Seiler, Senior Director of Communications at Mount Mary.
Witnesses say Andrea was hit and killed by an SUV as she tried to cross the street outside Comet Cafe on Milwaukee's east side Sunday night.
According to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner, Barringer was attempting to run across the street. She was in an unmarked crosswalk when she was hit.
"She was in the street. A whole bunch of people were out here crying," explains Dawn Tally, one witness on the scene. "It was really bad."
Witnesses say the driver stopped, but then took off. "the initial investigation says that he did stop, he did not get out of the auto, but then fled southbound on Farwell," says Lt. Craig Henry.
"My heart goes out to her family as well that they lost her like that," says Tally. "Just walking across the street."
Andrea's colleagues tell us she loved working with children and was studying art therapy, a way for people to express their feelings and heal through art.
"She was well regarded in the field," says Siler, "and thought to be on her way to being a very good practitioner."
Described as bright, witty, and compassionate, Andrea had everything to offer the world - one now filled people who will miss her.
"Her loss will be felt by people on campus and beyond, really," says Seiler.
Police have also taken a vehicle into custody that is similar to the one they were looking for. The vehicle was described as a beige, older model 2000 GMC or Chevrolet Blazer, possibly with front-end damage. The man was found after a tip from a citizen.
