Wisconsin trails national average in seat belt use
MILWAUKEE -- On Monday, the state of Wisconsin will launch a new round of the "Click It or Ticket" campaign, hoping to get more people to wear their seat belts.
The State Department of Transportation says nearly one in five motorists in Wisconsin does not wear a safety belt. More than half of all drivers and passengers killed in Wisconsin were not wearing their belts.
A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2012 showed that seatbelt use across the country was trending upward, with about 86% of motorists wearing their seat belts.
More than 400 enforcement agencies across Wisconsin will step up enforcement Monday, handing out $10 seat belt tickets in hopes of encouraging their use.
