Using an app to keep neighborhoods safe

MILWAUKEE- Crime in Milwaukee this summer has people looking for ways to protect themselves. Some are buying guns others are arming themselves with an online site to fight crime.
Joan Butz isn't computer savvy, but she's found a high tech way to stay on top of criminal activity in her neighborhood.
"There was one evening when i viewed something suspicious in the park and I got on it right away," she said.
Butz lives in the Kops Park neighborhood on the northwest side. Her neighborhood watch group recently joined a website called "Next Door Dot Com". The free site allows neighborhoods to create a private site that only the residents of that neighborhood can access.
Recently, Nextdoor.com created an app giving users like Butz instant access to information about what's going on in their neighborhood, in the palm of their hand.
"I think even the attendance at some of the safety meetings has increased because people are more informed an they get the reminder in more than one way," Butz said.
With the rash of violent crimes surrounding Kops Park, Butz believes these apps and sites can be a great tool to help neighbors stay connected and alert.
The ownership has very much increased in this neighborhood because... everyone feels a part of it."
