Wauwatosa 'going blue' to honor fallen officer Jen Sebena

By Annie Scholz. CREATED Nov 19, 2013 - UPDATED: Nov 20, 2013

WAUWATOSA - There's a touching effort to honor a Wauwatosa police officer who was killed by her husband by "going blue" this holiday season.

This Christmas Eve will mark one year since Wauwatosa Officer Jennifer Sebena was shot and killed by her husband.

"You don't want people to forget about what happened," says Dori Campbell.

Campbell is a Wauwatosa mother who's one of thousands supporting an online push to turn their lights blue this holiday season, in Jennifer's honor.

"Living in the neighborhood where her mom is, how nice for her mom to come back to her neighborhood and see that her neighbors support her."

The idea is to do it during the month of December, but they want to get the word out now. Jason Asselin started the campaign all the way from Kingsford.

"It's just something easy the community can do as one that everybody knows about," Asselin explains.

Jason has a cousin who's an officer in the Milwaukee area and tells TODAY'S TMJ4's Annie Scholz that when the call came out last year that an officer died, his heart dropped.

"Around the Christmas season the last thing you want to think about is what happened to her and how she went out, I think it would be a so much better and brighter idea to light up the community and show our support."

Dori is buying new lights this year - all of them blue.

"Well, I want to get some icicle lights for the front of the house," she says.

It's a small gesture to show Officer Sebena's family how much she and her fellow officers have meant to our families.

"They put their life on the line for us every single day to protect us, I think it's definitely important for them to know that we as a community appreciate them."

Jason says he's seen responses from people as far away as California who want to take part.
