Violent night in Milwaukee leaves one dead, at least 5 in the hospital

By Jaclyn Brandt. CREATED Aug 27, 2013

MILWAUKEE - Monday was another day filled with violence in Milwaukee. Numerous victims, including a police officer and three teens, are recovering in the hospital.

Milwaukee officer Dwain Monteilh was badly beaten after he and a partner came across two suspects acting suspiciously near 28th and Auer Monday. Police claim a fight ensued when the men tried to run, and one of the suspects went for officer Monteilh's gun.

"He put both his hands on his weapon to prevent it from being taken out of the holster,” MPD Chief Flynn explained. “The suspect struck and kicked officer Monteilh in the head."

The two young men are in jail, facing multiple charges. Monteilh is recovering with a broken bone and bleeding, above and behind his eye.

Three teens are also recovering after being shot while playing basketball near 26th and Orchard. The incident apparently started from a previous argument over a cigarette. Alderman Bob Donovan lives just two blocks from the shooting, and said something's has to change.

“Get the cops back on the streets so that they can maintain order before the city goes to a hell in a hand basket,” he said.

No arrests have been made in the shooting. All three teens are expected to make a full recovery.

Two men were also shot overnight in two different incidents.

A 20-year-old man was shot and killed near 29th and Burleigh just before midnight. No one has been taken into custody yet.

The second shooting happened in the 5200 block of North Teutonia. Milwaukee Police said a man was shot and ran to a nearby store for help. There are no suspects in the shooting.
