Schimel says as AG he'd have handled John Doe

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Wisconsin attorney general candidate Brad Schimel says he would have assisted in a secret investigation involving Gov. Scott Walker's campaign, a role that the current attorney general sidestepped.

Schimel said Wednesday that in his current role as Waukesha County district attorney, he's had to take on tough cases. He says if elected attorney general he'll continue to do so, as long as there is no direct conflict.

Milwaukee prosecutors launched two probes regarding Walker. One focused on his staff while he was Milwaukee County executive and the second reportedly involves Walker's campaign and conservative groups.

Prosecutors say Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen cited a potential conflict of interest for declining to assist in the investigation.

Walker, Van Hollen and Schimel are all Republicans. Van Hollen is not seeking re-election.
