RACINE -  The Racine County District Attorney has made a public apology after being arrested for drunk driving and hit and run.

Calling it one of the biggest mistakes of his life, Rich Chiapete admits to getting behind the wheel drunk before he crashed into a light pole on Racine's north side Friday night.

Chiapete was arrested at his home after he left the scene of the accident a couple blocks away.

"I want to make people understand I made a mistake, a horrible mistake." Chiapete said.

"Hopefully, someday I can make this right for everybody, because that's what I'm going to try to do." He added.

The District Attorney was ticketed for first time OWI and hit-and-run.

He said he will work to restore the public's trust and has no plans to resign.
