President Obama at Laborfest: 'America deserves a raise'

By Steve Chamraz. CREATED Sep 1, 2014 - UPDATED: Sep 1, 2014
MILWAUKEE -- President Obama spoke passionately about health care reform and equal pay for men and women at Laborfest Monday afternoon.

"I want an economy where your hard work pays off with higher wages and higher income, and fair pay for women and workplace flexibility for parents, and affordable health insurance and decent retirement benefits," Obama said. "I'm not asking for the moon, I just want a good deal for American workers."

Obama was as enthusiastic and energized as the crowd. As many as 6,000 union members and supporters seemed to hang on to the president's every word.

Most of those words were about the rebound from the great recession.

"By almost every measure, the American economy and American workers are better off than when I took office...by almost every measure," he said.

The president embraced his record ahead of an election based largely on it. Though he framed it as what could disappear if Republicans gain control of the Senate.

The president challenged Republicans to act with him in raising the minimum wage, and addressed the nation's pressing immigration crisis.

"America deserves a raise...Most of the policies I'm talking about have two things in common," he said. "They're gonna help working families get ahead and the Republicans who control congress oppose almost all of them...don't boo. Vote."

Prior to his speech, Obama was greeted by Governor Scott Walker, Mayor Tom Barrett and Congresswoman Gwen Moore as he landed at the 128th Air Refueling Wing, while democratic candidate for governor Mary Burke met with the president privately on the Summerfest grounds.
