Son charged in shooting death of father in Summit

SUMMIT - Murders rarely happen in the Village of Summit. The last one was over 30 years ago. But now, a community is in shock, after a father is gunned down by his own son.

Many neighbors who knew the two say father and son were very close. But the details in the criminal complaint paint a darker picture.

Shawn Witt stood in court Friday, charged with killing his father.

Waukesha County Sheriff Dan Trawicki says they’re still don’t know why he did this.

“That’s part of the initial investigation, and it’s part of the ongoing investigation,” explains Trawicki. “There certainly is evidence which we have that has him as the person we believe committed that crime.”

In fact, prosecutors charged Shawn Witt on Tuesday with beating his father.  The two got into an argument over loud music, and court documents state Shawn punched his father in the head.  J

James Witt took out a restraining order against his son, and told a judge he was afraid to go home.  It appears Shawn Witt got out of jail and went back to his house anyway, despite the restraining order.

Then someone called police on Wednesday, asking them to check on James Witt. When police got there, they discovered him inside. He’d been shot and was dead. His body was wrapped in a blanket on the basement floor.

“It’s weird,” remarks neighbor Bob Lange. “You don’t figure this is what would happen – not with them.” He often saw the two walking around the neighborhood.

Shawn Witt is in jail on a 1 million dollar cash bail.
