GLENDALE - Dozens of firefighters and their family members are in attendance as the North Shore Fire Deparment Board of Directors meet to approve the 2014 budget.
The budget includes a lower contribution to insurance premiums; firefighters will have to pay a higher deductible and co-pay.
Fire officials tell us the move is meant to keep a healthy balance between providing firefighters benefits but also maintain high standards for public safety.
The department reports net revenue losses across the board because of municipal budget cuts and a lower collection of ambulance fees. The chief says that's already forced he department to cut 14 firefighter positions and taken at least one ambulance out of service.
Firefighters here, however, have a much different perspective and claim the results of the new budget and insurance policy will raise their bills 300% and create undue hardship on their families.
