MILWAUKEE - “Our aunt is a statistic now, she’s a statistic to the streets. That’s frustrating because she wasn’t a number,” said Jesse Zuniga.
His aunt Gloria is the 93rd homicide in the City of Milwawukee this year, which surpasses last year’s total of 91, with 6 weeks left to go in the year.
“She has family members that miss her now for something so senseless,” Zuniga said of his aunt.
Police tell me Gloria Zuniga was shot as part of an on-going gang dispute. They are investigating whether this is related to another shooting just a few weeks ago. Neighbors are mad demanding the violence must end.
“There’s been a lot of tragedy in this city. It’s all about the community as a whole coming together and working with the authorities,” said neighbor Jim Holte.
Perhaps no one is as upset as Alderman Bob Donovan, who lives just two blocks from Zuniga.
“I am very upset. There’s a lot to be upset about. What’s disgusting to me is that more people aren’t upset,” Donovan said.
While the city is working to hire 100 additional police officers, Donovan argues that’s only a drop in the hat, and blames Mayor Tom Barrett.
“If we can find money for street cars, if we can find money for all the garbage that he proposes and not take care of safety first, this city is screwed, unfortunately,” Donovan said.
Zuniga’s family says Gloria obviously wasn’t the target, and hopes the shooter comes forward.
“They killed someone innocent,” said Jesse Zuniga.
A spokesperson for the Mayor Barrett tells says Alderman Donovan voted in favor of the budget, which added more than 100 police officers.
So far police have not made any arrests in the case.
